Cosgrove Opals, was founded
in 2026 by Lee & Maddy Cosgrove.
Redefining fine jewellery with an unhealthy obsession of Australian gem stones. Lee & Maddy’s journey started in 2019 in a very average garage with a box named bottles and rocks, and It’s only just begun. After years of collecting, fossicking & mining for opals and other various stones in our spare time we have finally decided to do something with them, because its quite apparent this obsession isn’t going anywhere. The brands focus is to create modern pieces, with an heirloom feel using a mix of opals and beautiful Aussie gem stones.
It turns out this obsession runs pretty deep in both of our gene’s so we really didn’t stand a chance. Lee’s great great-grandfather was a silversmith to the king of England. And Maddy’s great-grandparents were also collectors of gemstones, faceting and cabbing stones, setting them into jewellery - hence the box named bottles & rocks. In that box was a bunch of opals we had both never seen them before and we were mesmerised. So we did some research hopped in the car and drove 13hrs to the closest town where you could find opals (Yowah).
GAA Certified
Lee completed his certificate in Opal Studies with the Gemological Association of Australia in Feb 2026. Expanding his knowledge of opal identification, formation, characteristics, origins and the different types of opal found throughout Australia and around the world.
His knowledge is supported by hands-on experience with Australian opal and connections within the Australian opal industry, including contacts in several major opal fields.
For selected opals we offer a Certificate of Authenticity, providing customers with detailed information about the individual stone, including its type, weight, measurements, and a description.
Each certificate is individually prepared for the stone it accompanies, allowing you to keep a record of your opal and its characteristics.
Our certificates reflect our assessment and the information available to us at the time of issue. They are not intended to replace an independent gemological laboratory report or valuation.
